Love’s the greatest thing that we have.

Just a love song that aged well.
From one of the best bands the UK has ever produced.

Just what I needed.

Over the past few months, I’ve been suffering withdrawal symptoms from the lack of exposure to sun and sea water. Last week was really busy and I badly needed to get away from the city and clear my head a bit. And so.. Sib, Trifina, Odin and I made a quick trip last weekend to Virgin Beach Resort in San Juan, Batangas.

Even with my spoiled island girl ass accustomed to Boracay/Bantayan/Bohol shores, I have to say the place wasn’t bad at all. The resort’s beach is a really long stretch and even better, it’s totally private. It’s pretty expensive to stay there, but the day trips are affordable. Plus, it’s only 2 1/2 hours away, which in Manila standards, is near enough.

In a nutshell, we spent our time eating, swimming, baking in the sun (well, me and Trif anyway), sipping on drinks, and playing Monopoly Deal. It’s nice to have some color on my skin again.

Didn’t take that many pictures, but here are a few:

Brain Farts

1. Today, I ordered something different at Starbucks for the first time in years and ended up with a crap drink that I couldn’t even force myself to finish. I hate it when that happens. This incident has convinced me further to never try anything new at Mister Kebab. I don’t care that I’ve been ordering the same thing for six years.

2. I rarely listen to the radio or watch TV anymore, so I’m ALWAYS behind when it comes to pop hits. Now that I’ve said that, I would now like to say that I really love “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj. No joke, I only heard it for the first time yesterday. Ridiculous.

3. Wikipedia was down yesterday and I nearly died. Then I discovered that it was still available on mobile devices, so all was well with the world again. That SOPA thing has got to go, though.

4. And speaking of online piracy. To the music industry, I would really love to support the artists by purchasing their music and all. Unfortunately, buying music from iTunes isn’t available in the Philippines, so there. You guys might want to look into that.

5. The first month of 2012 isn’t even over yet, and the first quarter of the year is already packed with concerts in Manila and other places in Southeast Asia. I’m pretty excited to see who else might be gracing our shores in the coming months. SOUNDGARDEN PLEASE.

6. Odin and I watched “Coriolanus” yesterday. It was a really good adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. I only wish I wasn’t so tired because I must’ve nodded off three or four times during the movie. Ralph Fiennes did a fantastic job in directing and playing the title character, but personally, I think Vanessa Redgrave’s portrayal of Volumnia was flawless. In my opinion, she totally outshone the rest of the cast. The thing that really struck me the most while watching was the literary genius of Shakespeare – the way he’s able to develop such complex characters and storylines. Take the title character, for example. Though revered to be a military hero and a patriot, Coriolanus/Marcius was also a spoiled, ma-pride Mama’s boy. He puts up this whole “Screw all y’all” attitude, but deep inside, you know it kills him that nobody appreciates his heroics and all he wanted was to be respected. I also love how timeless Shakespeare’s works are that they can still be translated to modern setting without the script being compromised that much. So when you’re done snickering over the fact that the title has the word “anus”, go march your ass down to the movie theater and get some culture.

7. Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows was amazing. Guy Ritchie, you magnificent beast. In Cat’s words, YOU SALAMABITS! The script was clever and the visuals were stunning. Haven’t had that much fun watching a movie in a while. I so did not feel the two hours.

8. I am up to my neck in stress, which only fuels my excitement to get out of the city this Saturday for the long weekend. It’s Batangas for me this weekend, and hey, this is my first beach trip in Luzon since I moved here. (La Union doesn’t count because we didn’t swim at the beach then.) It’s also about time I get some color in my skin. I’m so sick of being white! This is unacceptable!

9. On those occasions when I have time to myself for doing nothing, I attend to my reading queue. I’ve got a bajillion books lined up and not as much time as I’d like to consume them all at once. For the past few days, I’ve been reading all sorts of stuff – from Asterix comics to Christian apologetics to web coding tutorials. Aside from the leisure reading, it feels nice to be “studying” again. If only I had this kind of initiative back in school.

10. Boom badoom boom boom badoom boom bass – he got that super bass! Sorry, this song is on repeat. I can’t stop!

When in doubt, all out!

Cat was here for a few days, so we all got together on a Sunday afternoon to catch up. Odin and I brought our new pack of Monopoly Deal and taught everyone how to play. We hung out for six hours or so, just talking, laughing and talking trash with one another. It felt just like college, but different. Good different. As the song goes: the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Can’t wait for the rematch, losers!

Too alarming now to talk about.

Yeah, can’t you hear my motored heart?

I think I’m going to cry. Or die. Or both.
